Taiwan Center of Greater Los Angeles Donates $100,000 to Aid Tainan’s Post-Disaster Recovery

Typhoon Danas severely impacted southern Taiwan, causing extensive damage in multiple areas of Tainan. The city government immediately mobilized personnel and resources to focus on disaster recovery and reconstruction. In response to relief efforts, the Taiwan Center of Greater Los Angeles donated $100,000 to the Tainan City Government. Mayor Huang Wei-che accepted the donation on behalf of the city today (August 8) and presented a certificate of appreciation.

Mayor Huang stated that Tainan’s Emergency Social Relief Fund originated from the NT$4.1 billion in disaster relief donations raised nationwide following the 0206 earthquake. After the earthquake, the remaining funds were repurposed for emergency assistance. The recent Typhoon Danas, along with subsequent heavy rainfall on July 28 and August 2, caused severe damage to residents, including financial losses, roof collapses, and vehicle destruction. The city government is using this fund to provide immediate aid to affected households and support their recovery, which holds significant meaning.

Liu Ling-hua, Vice Chairperson of the Taiwan Center of Greater Los Angeles, expressed that the center has long been committed to public service, embodying the spirit of community volunteers to create a warm home for Taiwanese Americans. Witnessing the devastation caused by Typhoon Danas in Tainan, where many families were left homeless, she felt deep empathy. This donation aims to offer tangible support to affected residents, helping them overcome hardships and rebuild their lives.

The Social Affairs Bureau noted that the Taiwan Center of Greater Los Angeles has consistently promoted charitable, cultural, and educational activities in the U.S., dedicated to preserving Taiwanese culture and serving as a vital pillar for Taiwanese Americans. Following the damage from Typhoon Danas and subsequent floods in Tainan, the center rallied the Taiwanese American community to extend cross-border assistance, bringing warmth and hope to post-disaster recovery efforts.

The bureau emphasized that the city government will allocate the funds responsibly under the principle of "dedicated use," ensuring they are directed toward rebuilding and stabilizing the lives of affected residents. Regular updates on fund usage will be provided to maintain transparency, with resources delivered swiftly and effectively to disaster-stricken areas. Moving forward, the city will continue assessing needs and collaborating with private sectors to ensure timely resource allocation for recovery.
