What Led to the Fall of the Government

One reason for the fall of the Borne government is that the ruling coalition does not hold a majority in the National Assembly. Currently, out of the 577 seats in the National Assembly, the left-wing coalition "New Popular Front" holds 190 seats, ranking first; the ruling coalition "Ensemble" holds 161 seats, ranking second; and the far-right National Rally holds 123 seats, ranking third.

The combined number of seats held by the two major opposition parties, the left-wing coalition and the National Rally, exceeds the absolute majority in the National Assembly (289 seats). The overwhelming advantage in seats held by the opposition parties has kept the Borne government in a precarious position.

Borne recently engaged intensively with various political factions in the parliament, particularly the opposition, but both major opposition parties explicitly stated they would not support her. Before the vote of confidence, Borne had a premonition of the outcome. In a television interview on the 5th, she直言不讳地说, "I am sacrificing myself to ease tensions."

Another reason for the fall of the Borne government is that its planned austerity budget草案 failed to gain public support. The草案 aimed to cut fiscal spending by 43.8 billion euros and reduce the deficit to 4.6% of GDP.

Additionally, the Borne government planned to取消两个公共假日 to increase production activities. This faced strong opposition from the French public. A survey conducted by Odoxa at the end of August showed that over 80% of the French public opposed this measure. According to a poll by the French Institute of Public Opinion, 82% of French people believed Borne was incapable of carrying out reforms. To protest the Borne government's budget草案, various sectors of French society previously planned to launch a large-scale demonstration titled "Block France" on September 10.
