Trump Complains of Mishaps During UN Speech, UN Responds

US President Trump complained during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly on the 23rd about a broken elevator and a malfunctioning teleprompter at the UN headquarters. The White House even went so far as to make statements with connotations of a "conspiracy theory." The UN responded that these two incidents were unrelated to the United Nations.

On the 23rd, Mr. and Mrs. Trump were riding an escalator inside the UN headquarters building to the General Assembly hall when it suddenly stopped. During his speech, Trump also encountered a teleprompter malfunction.

White House Press Secretary Levitt posted a screenshot of an article from the British newspaper The Times dated the 21st on social media. The article, discussing events such as the Trump administration cutting US funding to the UN and withdrawing from UN agencies, mentioned that some UN staff had "joked" about "possibly shutting off" the elevator when Trump attended the General Assembly meeting, "thus telling him we lack funds, so he'd have to take the stairs."

In an interview with the conservative US media Fox News Channel, Levitt stated that Trump not only encountered a "broken elevator" and a "broken teleprompter," but also that the sound from the audio equipment during his UN speech was "quieter and different compared to previous speakers." All of this, he said, "doesn't seem like a coincidence."

In response to the claims from Trump and the White House, UN spokesperson Dujarric stated that a safety device on the escalator might have been triggered when a photographer from the US delegation was taking pictures of Mr. and Mrs. Trump on the escalator, causing it to stop. Furthermore, according to Agence France-Presse citing Dujarric, regarding the teleprompter malfunction mentioned by the US side, the UN had "no comment because the US President's teleprompter is operated by the White House (staff)."
