Nearly 50 Economists, Led by Bernanke and Yellen, Urge U.S. Supreme Court to Overturn Trump Tariffs

According to multiple foreign media reports, nearly 50 economists, including former Federal Reserve Chairs Ben Bernanke and Janet Yellen, are urging the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn most of Trump's tariffs, stating that these tariffs are based on a misunderstanding of the global economy.

In a legal brief submitted on Friday, the nearly 50 economists pointed out that the trade deficit between the United States and other countries is a "normal phenomenon," not the "abnormal and extreme" threat cited by the Trump administration when invoking emergency laws to impose broad tariffs. Furthermore, tariffs cannot compensate for the deficit in any case.

According to earlier reports from Xinhua News Agency, the U.S. Supreme Court announced that it will expedite the review of the legality of most tariffs imposed by the Trump administration, with oral arguments scheduled for the first week of November. The tariffs involved in the lawsuit include the 10% "baseline tariffs" imposed globally by Trump under the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), higher tariffs on trading partners that have not reached trade agreements with the United States, and the so-called "fentanyl tariffs."
