Trump's Grand Promise of $2,000 for Everyone?
As U.S. tariffs drive up prices, a growing number of Americans are struggling under the financial strain. However, while the U.S. Supreme Court is reviewing the legality of the federal government's tariffs, President Trump, eager to gain public support, recently made a generous promise: to distribute a $2,000 tariff "dividend" to every American.
This statement stunned many, as the commitment would place a significant burden on the U.S. government's fiscal expenditures. Nevertheless, U.S. Treasury Secretary Besant appears to have found a way to deflect responsibility...
On Sunday, July 16 (Eastern Time), U.S. Treasury Secretary Besant stated that Trump's proposal to distribute $2,000 "dividend" payments to U.S. citizens from tariff revenues would require congressional approval.
"This remains to be seen," Besant said. "We would need relevant legislation to implement this measure."
This statement clearly contrasts with Trump's recent generous "promises." Recently, Trump has been boasting about the substantial funds raised this year through U.S. tariff revenues. Amid growing public dissatisfaction with the rising cost of living, he mentioned the so-called "dividend" checks.
Last Friday (Eastern Time), while speaking to reporters on Air Force One, Trump stated that he would issue checks to "everyone except the wealthy" at some point next year.
"This is a huge amount of money," he said at the time. "But we've collected substantial revenue from tariffs. Tariffs have enabled us to distribute this dividend. We will also reduce debt."
