Sichuan Power Grid's Electricity Load Reaches 73.56 Million kW, Setting a New Record for the Third Time This Year
State Grid Sichuan Electric Power Company revealed on the 5th that due to persistent high temperatures and clear, hot weather, the cooling load from air conditioners and other appliances has surged sharply. At 21:21 on August 4, the maximum electricity load of the Sichuan power grid reached 73.56 million kW, marking the third time in 2025 that a new historical record has been set—a 6% increase compared to the 2024 peak load of 69.29 million kW.
Since June, the Sichuan Basin has repeatedly broken high-temperature records, with temperatures in some areas remaining above 40°C for extended periods. The scorching weather has led to increased usage of cooling equipment such as residential air conditioners, coupled with higher electricity demand from industrial production during peak seasons and increased cooling and lighting needs in commercial spaces. These factors have collectively driven the power grid's electricity load to new highs.
Facing the challenges of high temperatures and heavy loads, State Grid Sichuan Electric Power Company has implemented multiple measures to ensure reliable power supply during the peak summer season. In terms of grid construction, 13 key projects for peak summer supply have been completed and put into operation, including the construction and upgrading of transmission lines and the expansion of substations. For power supply, the total installed capacity of the Sichuan grid currently stands at 150 million kW, with full utilization of hydropower, renewable energy, thermal power, and other sources, as well as maximizing external power purchases. On the demand-side management front, a comprehensive demand-response measures pool with a capacity of 9 million kW has been established, with over 4,000 users actively participating in demand-side market transactions. Additionally, new entities are actively involved in precise load regulation, with 30 virtual power plants and 295 energy storage projects already operational, providing adjustable capacity exceeding 1 million kW.
Currently, the Sichuan power grid is operating stably, with safe and reliable power supply. State Grid Sichuan Electric Power Company stated that it will continue to closely monitor weather and load trends, strengthen monitoring and dispatching, optimize operational methods, and prepare for extreme weather to ensure a full-capacity power supply.
