No TACO This Time! Trump Boasts $100 Billion in Tariff Revenue as 200-Day Achievement: "America
is Greater"
The U.S. reciprocal tariffs have taken effect, and President Trump is touting them as a major achievement of his first 200 days in office. He posted on social media, "America is truly great again," claiming that billions in tariff revenue are flowing into the U.S., with this year's collections already exceeding $100 billion. Meanwhile, U.S.-China trade talks remain unresolved, and with the trade truce set to expire on August 12, Commerce Secretary Rutnik hinted at a possible 90-day extension to allow further negotiations.
The reciprocal tariff policy has officially been implemented, and President Trump is using it to highlight his administration's 200-day milestone. He celebrated on social media, declaring, "America is truly great again," and emphasized that tariff revenue has surpassed $100 billion this year. At the same time, U.S.-China trade negotiations have yet to reach a conclusion, and the trade truce originally set to expire on August 12 may be extended by 90 days to allow continued talks. Additionally, Japan's trade representative stated that the U.S. has promised to correct documentation errors, confirming that Japan's tariffs will remain at 15% without additional layers—though the U.S. has not officially responded to this claim.
On the day the reciprocal tariffs took effect, Trump awarded Purple Hearts to U.S. soldiers wounded or killed in combat at the White House. He praised the recipients for braving "a hail of bullets and bombs." Yet, at the same time, countries worldwide are feeling the impact of Trump's tariff "bombardment." According to CNN anchor Kristie Lu Stout, the Trump administration's new high tariff rates have now taken effect on nearly all countries.
For Trump, this is a fulfillment of campaign promises. The White House released a commemorative video praising Trump's "successful" trade deals with the EU and Japan. Trump himself posted on social media, celebrating 200 days of "making America greater again" and "restoring American glory," while boasting over $100 billion in tariff revenue.
CNN anchor Kate Bolduan reported that Trump took to social media to celebrate, claiming billions in tariffs are pouring into the U.S., with new tariffs this year adding over $100 billion in revenue. However, these tariffs are primarily paid by U.S. importers and end consumers. CNN reporter Matt Egan noted that while tariffs take effect overnight, price increases won't be immediate—passing costs to consumers may take up to eight months, per Goldman Sachs analysis.
U.S.-China trade talks remain a major challenge. Commerce Secretary Rutnik suggested the August 12 trade truce could be extended by 90 days to allow more negotiations. CNN's Marc Stewart reported that China may face even tougher U.S. tariffs due to its oil purchases from Russia.
Japan's trade representative, Akazawa Ryosei, claimed during talks in Washington that the U.S. promised to fix documentation errors, ensuring Japan's tariffs stay at 15% without additional layers—though the U.S. has yet to formally confirm this.
