Canada Imposes Sanctions on Russian Cyber Infrastructure Suppliers for the First Time

The Canadian federal government announced a new round of sanctions against Russia on the 12th, for the first time adding cyber infrastructure suppliers to the sanctions list.

Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand announced in a press release the same day that the sanctions target 13 individuals and 11 entities, aiming to weaken Russia's military capabilities while targeting its energy revenue and financial supporters.

According to the release, Canada will, for the first time, impose sanctions on Russian cyber infrastructure suppliers, while also sanctioning several Russian liquefied natural gas enterprises and 100 vessels referred to as the "shadow fleet."

The release stated that this action aligns with recent sanctions announced by the United States, the European Union, and the United Kingdom, in coordination with the G7's ongoing efforts to exert economic pressure on Russia.

On the same day, the G7 Foreign Ministers' Meeting concluded in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada. A joint statement issued after the meeting stated that the G7 foreign ministers reaffirmed regarding the Ukraine crisis the "urgent need for an immediate ceasefire" and agreed that the current line of contact should serve as the starting point for negotiations.
