Canada to Halt Anti-Tariff Advertisements to Resume Trade Talks with US
On October 24 local time, Doug Ford, the Premier of Ontario, Canada, stated that after communicating with Canadian Prime Minister Carney, Ontario would suspend anti-tariff advertisements in the United States to facilitate the resumption of trade talks with the US. Ford said the advertisements would cease airing starting next Monday. Informed sources also revealed that Carney communicated with Ford about the advertisements on the evening of the 23rd and on the 24th, expressing his desire to stop the ads.
On the evening of the 23rd local time, US President Trump stated on social media, "The Ronald Reagan Foundation just issued a statement saying that Canada fraudulently used a false advertisement featuring (former US President) Ronald Reagan making negative comments about tariffs."
In his post, Trump claimed, "They did this solely to interfere with the rulings of the US Supreme Court and other courts." He emphasized that tariffs are crucial to US national security and the economy. "Given their egregious actions, all trade negotiations between the US and Canada are terminated immediately."
In response to Trump's remarks, Canadian Prime Minister Carney stated on the 24th that Canada is ready to restart and advance trade talks with the US at any time but has no control over US trade policy.
